University City Lineman Learn Boxing at the Boxing Club

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – In the last 10 years, football players have been using MMA as one of their off-season training programs.

This season, the University City High School Offensive and Defensive lines are giving it a go as well.

Ricky Guro the Manager of the Boxing Club in La Jolla is donating six classes to the UC football program once a week to teach the players how to use their hands even better when they are down in the trenches.

The one hour Saturday class is already paying dividends, players have increased their cardio, their fitness and their hand speed.

Guro who played offensive and defensive line at Mira Mesa High School. says he wishes they had this when he was in school.

Ryan Price the new Centurions Head Coach also likes the program because his Lineman get a chance to bond.  "The skill guys have 7 On 7, but the Lineman have never had something like this where they can all bond together.

The players also can't wait until the last class, not because they want it to end, but because they get a chance to meet former San Diego Chargers Linebacker Shawne Merriman and they also get to spar against one another.
