USD and SDSU set to square in the NCAA Tennis Championships
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The San Diego State Aztecs and University of San Diego Toreros will continue their rivalry but on a bigger stage, the NCAA tennis Championship up at the University of Southern California on Friday.
San Diego has had a successful 23-4 season as they make it their 5th straight post season appearance. They are also coming off a WCC regular season and championship title in back to back seasons. This is their 6th season under head coach Brett Masi. Last year in the tournament they advanced to the second round. Their top player is junior Uros Petronijevic who is currently ranked 56th in the nation. Earlier in the season USD faced SDSU and walked away with a close 4-2 victory.
The Aztecs finished the regular season 18-8. They are ranked 40th in the nation and received an at large bid to play in the post season for the first time since 2005. The Aztecs are led by longtime coach Gene Carswell. Their top player is Freddy Gelbrich who is ranked 121st in the nation.
Reguardless of who moves on to the next round after Friday’s match, they will have their hands full. In their bracket is defending national champions USC. The Trojans beat the Toreros earlier in the season with a 5-2 victory.
