USS Cole victim to have street named in her honor

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – It’s been years in the making, but a female sailor who died in the attack on the USS Cole, now has a street in her hometown named after her.

Lakiba Palmer was 22 when she was one of the 17 sailors killed in the attack on the Cole.

The ship was in the process of refueling when it was hit by another boat that was carrying explosives. She was one of the first female sailors to be killed in action aboard a U.S. warship.

Her name and her bravery are now recognized for all to see.

Lise Avenue will now be known as Lakiba Palmer Avenue, according to Councilwoman Myrtle Cole. Palmer was raised in a house on Lise Avenue, where her mother and brother still reside.

“Lakiba Palmer is undoubtedly a hero,” Cole said last month when the name change was unanimously approved.
