SAN DIEGO (CNS/KUSI) – A sailor aboard a San Diego-based guided-missile destroyer was reported missing at sea Tuesday in the Gulf of Oman.
U.S. and British units are searching for a Sailor from USS Halsey (DDG-97) who went missing while the ship was conducting operations in the Gulf of Oman Tuesday.
The Sailor did not report to watch and after a search of the ship, man overboard was called away.
Helicopters from Halsey, USNS Rainier (T-AOE-7), and the Royal Navy's HMS Cumberland are currently conducting search and rescue operations to find the missing Sailor. F/A 18 Hornets from the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and a P-3 maritime patrol aircraft have also been involved in the search.
The Sailor's name is being withheld while the search is ongoing.
The Halsey is named after World War II Adm. William F. “Bull” Halsey, and is part of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group.
