USS Peleliu set to be decommissioned
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The USS Peleliu, an amphibious assault ship with 35 years of service, is scheduled to be decommissioned in a special ceremony Tuesday morning.
The 820-foot Peleliu, which has been deployed 17 times and logged more than 1 million nautical miles, has called Long Beach and San Diego home during its service.
The Peleliu was commissioned on May 3, 1980 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and was named for a violent battle that took place during World Was II.
This decommissioning is the latest step in the transition from Tarawa-class amphibious assault ships to America-class amphibious assault ships. The newer ships are designed to help helicopters and small aircraft transport troops and goods from shore to ship in an easier fashion.
