USTA National Open Hard Court Championships

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – This week some of the best tennis players from around the nation swing by San Diego for the USTA National Open Hard Court Championships at the Balboa Tennis Club. Over two hundred players will participate from ages thirteen to 65. The tournament, one of four on the National schedule, includes teaching pros, college and high school players as well as aspiring professionals.

The quality of competition is so high due to the fact that players can acquire USTA points for their performance. These points help them to get into other higher level tournaments throughout the year, making it lucrative for amateurs. Many of those playing this week aspire to go pro, including Oceanside native Megan McCray who won the tournament in 2013.

“I definitely want to be a winner here that goes on to play pro too!” Says McCray.

The tournament is thrilled by the current play of one of their recent champions. The 2010 winner Jack Sock making headlines this week as he advanced to the 4th round of the French Open failing to superstar Rafael Nadal.

The finals for the tournament will take place on Sunday. Women begin at 9am and men at 11am at the Balboa Tennis Club.
