Vice President Joe Biden will visit San Diego Saturday to campaign for Rep. Scott Peters

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Vice President Joe Biden will visit San Diego Saturday to campaign for Rep. Scott Peters, D-San Diego, who is locked in a tight and nasty reelection race with challenger Carl DeMaio.

Peters’ campaign said Biden will deliver remarks at a get-out-the-vote rally at the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Kearny Mesa, three days before Tuesday’s general election.

The former City Council president and port commissioner got another boost with an endorsement by Gov. Jerry Brown.

“Scott Peters is that rare person who can rise above the partisan bickering in Washington and get things done,” Brown said. “He’s been a champion for biotechnology, healthcare and the cutting-edge industries that drive San Diego’s economy.”

Recent polls show the race is a dead heat, with DeMaio — also a former councilman — ahead by one or two points among likely voters.

DeMaio campaign spokesman Dave McCulloch said, “President Obama is rewarding Congressman Scott Peters with a visit from the vice president because they know Mr. Peters has served as a rubber stamp for this administration’s failed policies.”

The rare close congressional race involving an incumbent, allegations of sexual misconduct, an office break-in and millions of dollars of campaign donations from outside interests have focused national attention on the campaign.

Peters narrowly won the office two years ago, knocking Republican incumbent Brian Bilbray out of a seat that Democrats targeted for a decade.

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis recently announced that due to insufficient evidence, she wouldn’t file criminal charges against anyone for vandalizing DeMaio’s campaign office earlier this year, or against DeMaio for allegedly sexually harassing a campaign staff member.
