Vigil held to remember recent Eastlake High School graduate

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — A 17-year-old girl leaves her Chula Vista home Sunday night to go for a jog along the sidewalk. Little would her parents know she would never return home alive, losing her life in a most freak accident.

Leilani Magno, a recent graduate of Eastlake High School, was jogging on the sidewalk along Lane Avenue near Fenton Street when a pick-up truck veered onto the sidewalk and hit Leilani from behind, killing her.

Police say the driver, 47-year-old  George Joseph Espinosa, Jr., took off, only to turn himself into police the next day.

Leilani had a bright future ahead of her. Her 4.27 GPA earned her admission into UC Irvine where she wanted to study biology and eventually become a doctor.

Leilani was also the captain of the Eastlake girls’ track and cross country team. Her coaches say while she was a fast runner she will be remembered more for her big heart than her race times.

On Monday night a vigil was held for Leilani at Chula Vista Community Park.
