Vista, Santana High School coaches arrested for sexual misconduct with female, minor students
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Two high school coaches — one from Vista High School and the other from Santana High School — were arrested on charges of sexual misconduct with underaged, female students.
Vista High School — Detectives from the Sheriff’s Child Abuse Unit arrested Vista High School Basketball Coach Charlie Mercado, 36, for engaging in sexual conduct with a female high school student.
On May 11, a female student at Vista High School revealed to campus administration she was involved in an inappropriate relationship with Vista High School Basketball Coach Charlie Mercado. School Administration notified the Sheriff’s Department and an investigation was initiated.
During the investigation, detectives discovered that Mercado fostered an intimate relationship with the victim, and on one occasion met with her off campus where they engaged in inappropriate physical contact.
On July 13, a misdemeanor warrant (647.6 (a)(1) PC Annoy/Molest a Child under 18y/o) was issued for Mercado’s arrest.
Mercado voluntarily surrendered to the Vista Detention Facility last night and posted $10,000 bail. He has a court date of August 25, 2016.
Santana High School
A Santana High School Campus Supervisor (Security) / Track Coach Keith Silvia, 49, was also arrested for engaging in sexual conduct with a female high school student.
Last month the victim’s parents found letters from an unknown person in their daughter’s backpack. Further inquiry by the parents revealed the letters were from Santana High School Campus Supervisor/Coach Keith Silvia.
The victim’s parents reported the incident to school administrators who in turn reported it to the Sheriff’s Department. Detectives conducted an investigation and discovered Silvia fostered an intimate relationship with the victim and arranged more than one off campus meeting, where they engaged in inappropriate physical contact.
This morning Silvia voluntarily surrendered to detectives at the Sheriff’s Santee Patrol Station. Silvia was booked into the San Diego Central Jail for four misdemeanor counts of 647.6 (a)(1) PC annoying/molesting a child under 18 y/o, and one felony count of 288.4 PC, arranging a meet with a minor for the purpose of engaging in lewd acts.
