Week 7: Poway Titans 35, Vista Panthers 21

The Titans are hot as they pick up another ‘W’, bringing their winning streak to 4. Poway defeated visiting Vista, 35-21.

Both teams honored the United States Military by recognizing football staff who are proud veterans. Vista’s ROTC members presented the colors after the singing of the national anthem.

This game seemed to be neck-and-neck for a while as both teams did their best to answer any touchdown run, with another touchdown run.

Poway wasted no time getting onto the scoreboard first, putting up seven points early in their first possession. The Panthers then responded with a 73-yard touchdown run by Brian Kelly.

To end the second quarter, Poway surprised their opponents with a sweet trick play.

Everyone watched in suspense as quarterback Maximus Brown handed off the ball to DJ Owens, who reversed it off to Josh Butler… who then passed it to Vance Jefferson for a 39-yard Hail-Mary pass. To everyone’s disappointment, the beautiful play was not executed to ultimate perfection. The play ended just one-yard short of the goal line. The first half of the game ended 14-6, Titans.

Early in the third quarter, the Kelly put up another touchdown for Vista. This tied up the game 14-14.

The Poway Titans must not like game scores at a tie because it took them but one play for Josh Butler to run the ball 66 yards into the end zone. The Titans and Panthers continued the rest of the third and fourth quarters taking turns scoring touchdowns until the Titans kept their lead as the clock ran out.

PREVIEW

The Poway Titans (4-2) will host the Vista Panthers (4-1) this Friday as they celebrate Military Appreciation Night.

This game makes for an exciting matchup as the two teams are known for their running offenses.

Power players from both teams also seem to be evenly matched.

Panther junior David Flores averages 109 rushing yards per game, whereas, Titan junior Josh Butler averages 104.4 rushing yards per game.

But don’t forget to keep an eye out for Vista Panther quarterback Josh Davies because he has had no trouble taking the ball into the end zone for himself. Davies is currently tied for the CIF record with the longest run from the line of scrimmage at 99-yards.

Friday night’s game will be a great night for football as the Titans hope to continue their three-game winning streak and the Panthers come back onto the gridiron well rested from their bye week.
