Water drop called in to put out brush fire

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – An illegal campfire sparked the blaze off Fairmount Avenue and Talmadge Canyon Row.

It took ground and helicopter personnel about 20 minutes to subdue a small brush fire in a Talmadge-area gorge which began shortly before 10 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The flames blackened a roughly 40 by 50-foot area in steep, inaccessible terrain before crews were able to extinguish them, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said. The airborne personnel made a single water drop on the burn area.

A man contacted by firefighters in the neighborhood admitted to accidentally igniting the blaze, which posed no immediate structural threats, Swanson said.
