Week 1 City Game of the Week: Scripps Ranch Falcons 18, Serra Conquistadors 0

What a Week One game.

The Scripps Ranch Falcons and the Serra Conquistadors was a fun game, as it was City Game of the Week and also Scripps Ranch’s Pop Warner day.

The scoring started when Connor Battaglia sacked the Serra quarterback for a safety to get the Falcons started, making the score 2-0 Scripps Ranch.

Another key play for the Scripps Ranch Falcons was a fumbled punt recovery by Riley Merrigan. This was a big play that helped the Falcons to get great field position.

The Falcons, on the very next play, had a beautiful pass from quarterback Luke Derkins to Grant Norberg for a 15-yard gain.

Then Derkins was able to make a big throw to Dillon Gebase for a 24-yard touchdown, to make the score 9-0, Falcons.

The Falcons didn’t stop there as they recorded another safety, this one by Josh Boamah, making the score 11-0, Scripps Ranch.

If you thought the Falcons were done, think again.

Derkins threw another big touchdown pass to Rashad Griffin Jr. for a 23-yard touchdown, to make the score 18-0 Falcons.

Let’s not forget our Big Pig on Campus, Serra’s Dustan Ellison, as he had 84 rushing yards and 19 receiving yards.

Both teams played hard and this is only week one, stay tuned to see what the Conquistadors and Falcons do next week.

This Friday will be the first week of the Prep Pigskin Report. This week, Serra will meet Scripps Ranch. The game starts at 6:30 at Scripps Ranch.

Scripps Ranch is coached by Marlon Gardinera, who is starting his third year.

A strong Scripps Ranch Falcon is Nicholas Gardinera (RB), and, yes, he is coach’s son. Nicholas rushed for 1,036 yards last season.

Scripps Ranch hasn’t earned seven wins since 2009.

Serra is coached by Dru Smith, who is starting his fourth year.

The Serra Conquistadors have some strong players including Tim Zebroski (QB) who is starting his third year. He received the Central League Offensive Player of the Year last year. Not to mention, the 3,848 yards he has thrown the past two seasons.

The Conquistadors scored a school record of 499 points to pass the previous record of 388 points.

In 2018, Serra had a record of 9-4, and Scripps Ranch had a mark of 6-4.

The last time the Conquistadors went head to head with the Falcons, the Falcons took home the win, 28-22.

Even though the Falcons won in 2018, with the start of a new season and some new players it will be a good opening matchup.
