Week 1 Game of the Week: Cathedral Catholic Dons 42, La Costa Canyon Mavericks 9
The Cathedral Catholic Dons dominated the La Costa Canyon Mavericks with their offensive line en route to a 42-9 win.
The Dons got on the board first midway through the first quarter when QB DJ Ralph hit Jack Kilpatrick with a 16-yard pass, Watson ran for 17 yards inside the 5, setting up Ralph for a 1-yard plunge into the end zone and a 7-0 lead. The Mavs responded immediately when QB Marshall Eucker connected with WR Trevor Gonzales for 27-yard, hit another 18-yard pass, then RB Aiden Lippert ran for another 18. The drive stalled and LCC settled for a 38-yard field goal by Joe Bowman to make it 7-3.
Cathedral then ran away with the game behind a veteran offensive line. Watson scored from 2 yards and 1 yard out extending the lead to 21-3 midway through the second quarter. RB Christian Hall then broke a 64-yard touchdown run making it 28-3 at the half.
Zavien Watson then put the exclamation point on the victory when he made a couple of nifty moves at the line of scrimmage before breaking into the clear for a 47-yard touchdown run. That made it 35-3. Watson, who has already committed to Arizona on a baseball scholarship, finished the night with 20 carries for 127 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Next week Cathedral hosts Saguaro High School out of Scottsdale, AZ. The Sabercats are ranked #1 in the state of Arizona and #22 in the nation. The Mavericks will host Vista in their home opener.
PREVIEW – The Cathedral Catholic Dons begin defense of their 2018 Open Division title by hosting a hard-hitting and hungry La Costa Canyon Mavericks squad this Friday night.
The Dons were the 2018 CIF Open Division champs last season and went to a state division title game, as well, but fell in overtime.
Cathedral head coach Sean Doyle begins his 24th season at the helm and will have another strong team this season.
Quarterback D.J. Ralph should be well protected with a veteran offensive line and a running game led by Zavien Watson.
Defensively, Cathedral Catholic will have a strong and physical front seven led by linebacker Jordan Allen.
The Mavs are coming off of a 6-4 season where they struggled with injuries down the stretch.
You can always count on La Costa Canyon being a physical team on defense.
Head coach Sean Sovacool, starting his 10th season at the helm, demands that.
TheMavs are led by linebacker Ozzie Nicholas who is always around the football creating havoc.
LCC quarterback Marshall Eucker will lead the offense with wide receiver Trevor Gonzales as a big downfield threat.
