Week 1: Mira Mesa vs Helix
Mira Mesa (20) vs Helix (28)
On a night where Helix honored 70 years of football excellence, the Highlanders opened the season with a 28-20 victory over the Marauders of Mira Mesa.
With a packed crowd on hand to celebrate legends dating back to the 1950s, Helix leaned on senior running back Christian Washington to begin their season 1-0. Washington rushed for three touchdowns, including the game winner to put the game out of reach.
It wasn’t a pretty game for either side. Aside from Washington, both offenses struggled to get anything going.
After taking a 3-0 lead into the second quarter, Washington scored the first touchdown on the season on a two yard rush to put his team up 9-0. He followed that up with a 40 yard touchdown run to make it 15-0.
Mira Mesa responded just before the half. QB Alex Zappia connected with Denon Fagan on a 62 yard pass, which led to Zappia completing a 21 yard touchdown pass to Tajon Evans to make the score 15-6.
Mira Mesa kept the momentum going, returning the second half kick-off to make the score 15-12.
With the game up for grabs in the fourth, Helix running back Kevin Allen scored on a 16 yard run to put the Highlanders up 21-12.
Deep in their own territory, Mira Mesa failed to move the ball and were forced to punt. A bad snap led to Helix blocking the punt and recovering it on the 2 yard line. Washington scored his third touchdown of the game on a two yard rush to put Helix up 28-12 with less than two minutes to go.
Once again, Mira Mesa returned the kick-off for a score, successful on the two-point conversion to make it 28-20.
Helix recovered the onside kick, securing the win for the Highlanders on this memorable night.
Helix be at Otay Ranch next week while Mira Mesa will host San Marcos.
