PREVIEW

The Sweetwater Red Devils will ring in the 2019 football season versus the San Pasqual Golden Eagles this Friday evening, August 23 at 7p.m.

The Red Devils are looking forward to a fresh start after finishing their 2018 season on a 3-8 record. This will be an opener rematch for the two teams where the Eagles outscored the Red Devils, 48-7, in the 2018 season.

The Eagles expect to come out strong with a deep set of seniors on both sides of the ball. Seniors Trevor Jungman (QB) and Johnny Vega (MLB) are expected to lead and take charge on offense and defense.

Jungman played a key role for the Eagles last season, leading them in rushing yards (613 yards) along with 12 touchdown passes.

Vega led the Eagles in tackles two years in a row, totaling 183 tackles. Vega was awarded First Team All-League in 2018.

Red Devils head coach Bryan Wagner is continuing his third season with this team.

The Devils were able to make an appearance in last years playoffs, however, their season was ended after the first round against the Serra Conquistadors, 52-14.

Wagner states that they’ve worked to become a smarter and more efficient team on both sides of the ball and expects to make another playoff appearance with the help of senior Nicolas Salazar (WR) and junior Mario Villa (RB).

Sweetwater High School is currently making some improvements to their home field, so its first two games will be hosted at Hilltop High.
