Week 10: Mount Carmel Sundevils 34, Del Norte Nighthawks 7
It was a matchup between two 2-6 teams with outside chances of making the playoffs when the Del Norte Nighthawks traveled to Mt. Carmel to face the Sundevils. The Sundevils fed off the energy off the home crowd and rode that wave to a dominating victory over Del Norte, 34-7.
Not much happened in the first quarter, as both team’s defenses remained stout and neither side was able to score through the first 15 minutes.
After knocking on the door a couple of times, the Sundevils were finally able to break through as quarterback Carson Taumoepeau found running back Jayden Virgin on a 25-yard score to put Mt. Carmel up, 7-0.
Once the second half started, it was all Mt. Carmel.
Taumoepeau found Virgin again, this time on a 22-yard touchdown pass down the seam to put the Sundevils up 13-0 after a missed extra point.
Del Norte, on their next possession, fumbled the ball in their own territory and the Sundevils recovered on the 10-yard line.
With incredible field position, Taumoepeau wasted no time finding Jake Ventimiglia on a 10-yard fade to put Mt. Carmel up, 20-0.
Jayden’s brother, Ty, got into the act and took a handoff into the end zone from 30 yards out, putting the Sundevils up, 27-0.
The Nighthawks tried their best to get back into the game on their next possession. Quarterback Jack Borer found Jake Hadzicki from 15 yards out cutting the deficit to 27-7 at the end of the third quarter.
Mt. Carmel then began to run the football and ultimately salted the game away with one more touchdown run from Ty Virgin. His 25-yard touchdown run ended up being the final score of the score as Mt. Carmel took down the Del Norte Nighthawks, 34-7.
Mt. Carmel’s record moves to 3-6 and its final regular-season game of the year takes place at home when it faces Westview next Friday. Del Norte’s final game will take place on the road when it faces the Matadors of Mount Miguel.
