Week 10 North County Game of the Week: Carlsbad Lancers 24, La Costa Canyon Mavericks 7

The Carlsbad Lancers (5-3, 3-2) took the lead 13-12 in the 25th Annual Rotary Cup with a 24-7 over La Costa Canyon (6-2, 2-2) at Bob McCallister Field on Friday night in the Prep Pigskin Report North County Game of the Week.

A bad hand off exchange on the first play of the game set the tone for the both the Carlsbad defense and La Costa Canyon offense when it was recovered by Bryce Vassau and returned inside the 5-yard line.  The Mavericks would hold the lancers to a field goal, but the defense being on the field for more than two-thirds of the game eventually wore them down.

LCC would score on a double reverse pass in the 4th quarter to cut the lead to 10-7 late in the 4th, yet Carlsbad would answer two late touchdowns passes from Keoni Quintana to Cole Wright, along with an interception by University of Washington commit Asa Turner, which was too much to overcome for LCC.

Next week La Costa Canyon will travel to Del Mar for the “Beach Bowl”, while the Lancers will travel to Vista for a Non-league contest.

Preview

Two schools separated by just 11 miles face off in the Prep Pigskin Report North County Game of the Week.  Carlsbad (4-3, 2-2) welcomes in La Costa Canyon (6-1, 2-1).  Both teams had their games last week declared no contests because of the thunder and lightning storm.

Despite losing starting running back Karson Lippert early in the season the mavericks have persevered, thanks in part to their defense lead by Junior LB Austin “Ozzie Nicholas and senior DE Sam Hussin. What makes the defense so tough to prepare for is you never know where the pressure is coming from.

Carlsbad has done it this season with their offense.  Senior QB Keoni Quintana has thrown for 17 TD Passes with four of those going to junior WR Coleby Whitlock and another three to Washington commit senior Jacob “Asa” Turner.  On the ground senior RB Luke Armstrong has found the end zone 10 times.

This game is big in how Open and Division 1 CIF Standings shake out in 2 weeks.  We will have highlights of this game plus another 30 on the Prep Pigskin Report Friday night at 11:00 PM on KUSI-TV.  You can follow me on Twitter @Rickwillis99 for live scoring updates.
