Morse Tigers 52, University City Centurions 33

There was no love lost in a heated matchup between Morse and University City in Week 10. The game had plenty of penalties and a couple ejections, and the Tigers ultimately spoiled City’s Homecoming game with a 52-33 win.

The Tigers’ running backs slashed through the University City defense all night on their way to racking up over 450 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

The Morse backfield responded to the mid-week and mid-game trash talk from City with an absolutely phenomenal showing on Friday night. Shamar Martin, Isiah Thompson, and Rayvon Benson let their game do the talking, as they all eclipsed the century mark in rushing yards against the Centurions.

University City set the tone for what would be a very hostile matchup with their pre-game walkout, in which they stormed the field and ran over to bark at the Tigers’ sideline. The bad blood and trash talking culminated in an ugly brawl late in the second quarter. An impressive one-handed touchdown grab by City’s Casey Granfors was overshadowed by a fight between E’Lonie Rico and Andre Smith. Both teams were assessed unsportsmanlike penalties, and both players were ejected.

This was especially costly for University City; Rico is a special talent and a team leader on both sides of the ball. His absence undoubtedly hurt the Centurions’ chances at a comeback.

Shamar Martin, a senior corner and running back bound for UCLA next fall, would have the last laugh against City. His remarkable first half highlights helped Morse earn an untouchable lead. After showing off his incredible pace on a 58-yard touchdown just before the end of the first quarter, the playmaker doubled up with a 54-yard score late in the second. Martin juked multiple City defenders on his way to the endzone and gave the Tigers a 46-20 lead at the break.

Despite the loss, University City quarterback Gunnar Gray and wideout Casey Granfors were terrific throughout. Gray threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns, and added a rushing touchdown as well. Granfors was the primary recipient for most of the game, as he racked up 256 receiving yards and two scores on the night.

University City drops to 4-5 after the tough loss on Homecoming week, and they’ll have another challenging test next week against Christian (7-1). Morse improves to 5-3 on the season, and their game at St. Augustine (6-3) next Friday will have a huge impact on their postseason aspirations.

PREVIEW-

The University City Centurions host the Morse Tigers for a pivotal league matchup in Week 10. This figures to be an exciting battle, as both teams are fighting for their first conference win.

University City is coming off of a tough 17-0 road loss against La Jolla last week. Though the Centurions’ defense was impressive for most of the game, the offensive unit could not conquer the elements on what was a very rainy Friday night across the San Diego area.

If University City wants to move the ball effectively this week, they will need quarterback Gunnar Gray and dynamic playmaker E’Lonie Rico to return to the stellar form they showed earlier in the year.

Rico, a senior running back and linebacker, has been a major contributor for the Centurions on both sides of the ball. He recorded a receiving touchdown and a pick-six in Week 7, so his big-play ability could be a deciding factor in Friday’s game.

The Morse Tigers are equally eager for a conference win, as they look to rebound from a 14-8 home loss against Christian two weeks ago.

Despite the loss, the Tigers’ defense was phenomenal throughout. The group recorded five tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, and one fumble recovery in Week 9.

The Tigers’ defense is a fierce and experienced unit led by seniors Devin Brown, Shiloh Logan, and Shamar Martin. Martin is also a key piece in Morse’s dominant rushing attack, and he serves alongside powerful runner Isiah Thompson in the backfield. Earlier in the season, the duo showed their ability to take over games, so their combination of speed and strength in the rushing offense could have a big impact on this week’s outcome.
