Week 10 South Bay Game of the Week: Hilltop Lancers 20, Mar Vista Mariners 7

The Week 10 South Bay Game of the Week features the Hilltop Lancers (3-5) hosting the Mar Vista Mariners (6-2).

The Mariners will definitely have to be prepared for an aerial attack from the Lancers. Hilltop quarterback Joey Castillo loves to throw. He has passed 270 times this year for 1,615 yards. While his arm is not overpowering, he is extremely accurate.

The Lancers, meantime, will face a definite ground attack by the Mariners. The question this night: which will prevail…the air or ground assault?

In the second quarter Castillo throws a nice touchdown pass to Marcos Deanda to give Hilltop the lead.

In the third quarter the two hook up again to make it Hilltop 13, MarVista 0.

Mar Vista’s Jacob Galeana makes a nice long run to set up his short scamper into the end zone to make it 13-7 Lancers.

Hilltop widens its lead with a run by Marcos Deanda, his third touchdown of the game.

The Lancers own the clock in the final eight minutes allowing them to maintain possession and not giving Mar Vista the chance to come back.

In the end the Lancers prevail in winning 20-7 and clutching the South Bay League title in the process, much in thanks to the aerial attack.

PREVIEW – The Week 10 South Bay Game of the Week features the Hilltop Lancers (3-5) hosting the Mar Vista Mariners (6-2).

The Mariners will definitely have to be prepared for an aerial attack from the Lancers. Hilltop quarterback Joey Castillo loves to throw. He has passed 270 times this year for 1,615 yards. While his arm is not overpowering, he is extremely accurate.

The Lancers had a good last game. They were losing to Sweetwater when the game had to be called because of lightning. However, the next day they handily beat the Red Devils.

The Mariners, conversely, are more of a running team. Hasan Spruill leads the team offensively with 131 yards per game. On defense, Diego Garza has wracked up 50 solo tackles over seven games. Concussion protocol caused him to miss some time on the field.

The Lancers love playing at home as they now have a field with artificial turf.

Both head coaches have respectable post high school experience. After a great career at Bonita Vista, Mar Vista’s Tyler Arciaga went on to play professionally for a team in Europe, and specifically Austria. Lancer head coach Drew Westling played college football.
