Week 10: Valhalla Norsemen 28, El Capitan Vaqueros 20
In a game that will happen again next year, although, in a different league configuration, the Valhalla Norsemen defeated the El Capitan Vaqueros, 28-20, in a Grossmont Hills League game on Friday, Oct. 25.
The two teams will be switching to the Grossmont Valley League next year as part of the reorganization of the Grossmont Union High School District as was announced just a couple of weeks ago.
Valhalla (4-5, 1-3 Grossmont Hills League) took the early lead on a 37-yard reverse by Josh Meredith with just about eight and a half minutes left in the first quarter.
The Norsemen added another touchdown five minutes later when Kegan Baker scampered in from 25 yards out to make it 14-0, Orange.
Shortly before the end of the first quarter, Wick Hauser, of El Capitan (1-8, 1-3 GHL), took the snap and then scrambled for a 50-yard quarterback draw. That set up Donny Green, who punched it in from three yards out to cut the lead to 14-7, Valhalla.
Shortly before halftime, the Norsemen intercepted a Hauser pass at the El Capitan 40. Baker took it to the house from three yards out to make it 21-7, Valhalla, at the break.
El Capitan came out of halftime with a bang as Hauser completed what initially looked like a safe screen pass to Kalen Lavallais. Well, when the play was done it was a 64-yard screen that went the distance to make it 21-14, Valhalla.
As they say in infomercials, “But wait, there’s more!”
With about five and a half minutes left in the third quarter, Hauser found Sean Dickson open by himself in the middle of the end zone for a 21-20 score. The extra point was blocked. That was as close as El Capitan would get.
Valhalla would add a late touchdown to secure the victory when Baker scored from seven yards out 50 seconds into the final quarter.
Valhalla will wrap up its season with a short drive to Granite Hills (4-5, 0-4 GHL) to take on the Eagles next Friday. El Capitan will host the Foothillers of Grossmont (6-3, 2-2 GHL).
