Week 11: El Camino Wildcats 28, Oceanside Pirates 24
When it comes to Rivalry Week, it’s anyone’s game, and the ‘Battle of the O’ was no different. Oceanside was the favorite heading into Friday night with a record of 6-3, but El Camino wasn’t fazed despite being 3-6 on the season.
After a strong defensive performance in the second half and a thrilling offensive performance in the fourth quarter, El Camino finished victorious, 28-24.
Oceanside’s Kavika Tua got the Pirates offense going early with a 41-yard gain on their first drive of the night. Tua’s big run set up a 12-yard rushing touchdown by Tyrell Bellmon, putting the Pirates in the driver seat for a strong offensive performance in the first half.
By the beginning of the second quarter, Oceanside was up a quick 14-0, mainly due to Tua’s impressive run game. The star running back already eclipsed 100-plus yards rushing with 10 minutes to go in the first half.
El Camino didn’t get on the board until late in the second quarter thanks to a 3-yard rushing touchdown from Noah Sega to cut Oceanside’s lead 21-7. The Wildcats were able to get in scoring position thanks to 33-yard pass play from Joey Armentrout to Elijah Valles.
Despite being down 24-7 at the end of the first half, Sega’s touchdown gave them enough energy to come out strong the second half and claw themselves back to three-point game.
With less than four minutes to go, Sega put the Wildcats in scoring position with a 34-yard gain. On third and goal, Sega took matters into his own hands and rushed the pigskin into the end zone for a touchdown.
El Camino won, 28-14.
