Week 11: Rancho Bernardo Broncos 16, Poway Titans 7

The Rancho Bernardo Broncos got a huge victory on Friday night, beating the Poway Titans, 16-7.

Neither offense could get much going in the first quarter, as each team punted twice on their first few possessions.

That began to change in the second quarter, as Poway found some momentum on a couple of solid first down runs from senior running back Josh Butler. The Titans found themselves on the Bronco side of the field for one of the first times and decided to take a shot for the end zone.

That’s where Rancho Bernardo’s Caleb Armstrong made one of the biggest plays of the game. He intercepted a pass in the end zone and ran it out to the 21-yard line to give his offense the ball back.

On the Broncos’ first play of the following drive, senior quarterback Zeke Payne found senior wide our Carson Palacki deep for a big 72-yard gain. The Broncos finished the possession off with a 7-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 lead, which they took into halftime.

In the third quarter, both offenses were able to carve out some nice drives. After a couple of first downs, Rancho Bernardo’s Payne took another shot deep to his favorite target of the night, Palacki. Palacki took the ball 49 yards to the house to give the Broncos a 13-0 lead.

On the Titans’ ensuing possession, senior quarterback Andrew Wiesley found senior receiver DJ Owens deep for a much-needed first down. Later on that drive, Wiesley found Owens once again for a 6-yard touchdown pass.

That cut the Broncos lead to 13-7.

The Rancho Bernardo defense stepped up and made some big plays in the fourth quarter, shutting down the Titan offense. A Bronco field goal from Landon Ogles put them up 16-7, and that score would hold true.

The win puts the Broncos at 7-3 for the year, while Poway finishes the regular season with a 6-4 record.
