Week 12: Brawley Wildcats 44, Kearny Komets 28

The Brawley Wildcats won out in the desert, defeating the visiting Kearny Komets by a final of 44-28 in the first round of the CIF Division III playoffs.

The player of this game was Blake Krigbaum for Brawley with four rushing touchdowns, along with 190 yards on 25 carries.

Brawley got on the board first with a Krigbaum 4-yard rushing touchdown to put the Wildcats up 7-0.

Kearny, however, went on a terror for the rest of the first half.

To put the Komets up 14-7 early in the second quarter, Dazure Peggett scored on a 74-yard jet sweep as he ran by Wildcat defenders on his way to the endzone.

Later in the second quarter, Kearny went up 21-7 courtesy of a Ty Childers read-option pitch to Nico Estrada and Estrada did the rest from 18 yards out.

Kearny was up 28-7 at one point in the second quarter.

Brawley would tack on a late touchdown by Krigbaum to make the score 28-13 going into halftime.

The Komets wouldn’t score for the rest of the game.

On the first play of the second half, there was an 80-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-20, Kearny.

With all the momentum, Brawley would score again thanks to Ethan Gutierrez on a 15-yard run to put the Wildcats up 30-28 midway through the third quarter.

In the fourth is when Krigbaum took over with 11 minutes left in the game. Krigbaum went for an 80-yard touchdown run, blowing by Kearny defenders to make the score 37-28 Brawley.

To finally end Kearny’s season, star running back Krigbaum sealed it with an 8-yard touchdown run late in the fourth to make it 44-28 Brawley.

For Kearny, it marked the end of their season.

For Brawley, the Wildcats will take on Hilltop next week in the quarterfinals of the CIF Division III playoffs.
