Week 12: Central Union Spartans 46, Mount Carmel 38
The Central Union Spartans edged past the Mt. Carmel Sundevils, 46-38. The Spartans were in the driver’s seat from start-to-finish.
Angel Nava-Esparza started the scoring with a touchdown from a yard out.
Later in the first, Nava-Esparza found the end zone again, this time from 4 yards out to put the Spartans up 14-0.
Mt. Carmel got going early in the second when quarterback Carson Taumoepeau found Jayden Virgin for a 27-yard touchdown strike to bring the Sundevils to within a score.
But the Spartans responded as Nava-Esparza found the end zone for the hat trick. The 2-yard score put Central Union up 21-7.
Then the Spartans let it fly.
Quarterback Deniro Osuna went up top to Michael Sullivan on a 67-yard bomb and extend the lead to 28-7.
The Sundevils refused to go quietly.
Joshua Dolendo sniffed out an errant throw and returned the interception 16 yards for a touchdown sending Mt. Carmel into the half down 14 and receiving the second-half kickoff.
It was Central Union striking early in the second half, however.
And who else but Nava-Esparza?
He went in from a yard out again and the Spartans increased the lead, 38-17.
Taumoepeau went deep again soon after. He found Jake Ventimiglia for the 39-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 38-24.
But Nava-Esparza decided five times is better than four.
He capped off his five-touchdown night with a 25-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach.
Central Union will play San Diego High School next week.
