Week 12: Coronado Islanders 29, Mount Miguel Matadors 27
Friday’s San Diego CIF Division IV first-round matchup pitted the 5-5 Mount Miguel Matadors and the 6-4 Coronado Islanders, as the Islanders won, 29-27.
This game started off slow and picked up at the start of the second quarter.
The first touchdown in the game was scored by Coronado’s Tyler Buckley to give the Islanders the lead 7-0.
Almost a minute after Coronado’s touchdown, Mount Miguel tied it up, 7-all with a 44-yard touchdown from Jahiem Allen-Pompey.
The next drive from Coronado resulted in a game-intensifying interception from Allen-Pompey. This put the Matadors in great scoring position, and that they did.
A little over a minute into the possession, quarterback Jacob Laverdiere scored on a 9-yard run to make the game 14-7, Mount Miguel.
Mount Miguel advanced their lead when Anthony Mitchell scored a 9-yard touchdown, making the score 21-7.
Coronado made a late comeback with 1:48 left on the clock when senior Devon Schulte returned a fake punt to the end zone, making the score 21-14, Mount Miguel.
The third quarter of this match kicked off with a touchdown from Coronado and a safety against the Matador punt team, putting the Islanders on top 23-21.
Coronado kept the momentum going all thanks to Schulte, who scored the majority of the Islander touchdowns on Friday evening and he scored another one in the fourth quarter, as well.
After Schulte’s touchdown in the fourth, the kicker missed the extra point, making the score 29-21.
Mount Miguel fought back hard to get the touchdown, and Mitchell made that possible.
With 42 seconds left in the game and the Matadors trailing by two, the offense stayed on the field and they attempt a two-point conversion.
The conversion was stopped on the 1-yard line and the Islanders gained possession, eventually running out the clock.
Mount Miguel ended their season 5-6 and Coronado stands at 7-4, and the Islanders play the Serra Conquistadors at Serra High School next Friday at 7 p.m.
