University City Centurions 47, El Capitan Vaqueros 30
First round of playoffs is officially in the books. This Division III face-off between the El Capitan Vaqueros and the University City Centurions will be one to remember. University City managed to seal the night with a 47-30 first-round victory over El Capitan.
In the first quarter, University City’s passing duo Gunnar Gray found Casey Granfors for a 27-yard touchdown pass, they put the Centurions on the board at 7-0.
El Capitan responded with Wick Hauser pulling off a 23-yard QB keeper touchdown. Hauser managed to tie the game in the second quarter at 7-7.
Gunnar Gray having the ball is a pretty dangerous thing, but what’s even more dangerous are his receivers. Gray connected with Jurnie Smith for a 67-yard touchdown reception. University City gained the 14-7 lead.
Still in the second quarter, University City’s Jimmy Galindo kept the momentum going with an interception which later set up his 6-yard touchdown run. Galindo’s night was exciting to say the least, he ended the night with 3 touchdowns.
Before the fourth quarter started, University city lead 27-10. Once the game ended there was a final score of 47-30. These two teams gave it their all not only throughout the entire game, but especially in the fourth.
The fourth quarter included a noteworthy 60-yard carry by Taylor Grasmick which would go on to set up Wick Hauser with another QB keeper touchdown from 4-yards out. If a 60-yard carry doesn’t scream effort I don’t know what does.
While more touchdowns were made in the fourth quarter from both sides, El Capitan couldn’t keep up.
In the end these two teams should be proud, though El Capitan ends their 2018 season, their earnest 2018 efforts should not go unnoticed. University City will go on to play Christian High’s Patriots next week in the Quarterfinals.
Week 12 is upon us, which means teams will now be embarking on their playoff journeys starting this Friday night. The first round of playoffs takes us to the University City Centurions (4-6) hosting the El Capitan Vaqueros (3-7) in what’s bound to be an exciting Division III playoff game.
University City has managed to impress on both sides of the ball, but the Centurions have made sure to stand out in terms of defense. University City’s defense have managed to come out of regular season with a total of 12 interceptions, proving this team makes sure to stay on their toes. Let’s see what these alert defenders bring to the table this week.
El Capitan’s junior quarterback Wick Hauser seems to be extremely reliable in the pocket. Hauser has pulled off a pass completion of 69% this season. And did we mention his total of 1,189 passing yards? Hauser has a lot of options in terms of receivers to connect with this Friday night.
Which team will clinch a first-round victory?
