Week 12 Game of the Week: Torrey Pines Falcons 34, Rancho Bernardo Broncos 6
Torrey Pines went to Rancho Bernardo as a No. 10 seed in the first round of the Division I CIF playoffs and dominated en route to a 34-6 win.
The Falcons established the tone of the game on the Broncos’ opening drive when Mo Vanderwiel picked off a Zeke Payne pass and returned it 50 yards to set up a 27-yard field goal by Gabe Panikowski.
Torrey Pines then got physical with their running back Cael Helfrich dragging tacklers throughout the next drive, which finished with a 1-yard touchdown plunge to make it 10-0 Falcons.
Quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi added a 9-yard touchdown pass to Matt Lauter late in the second quarter.
However, the defense forced a quick three-and-out on the Bronco offense and Torrey Pines took advantage.
As time expired to end the first half, Panikowski drilled a 55-yard field goal, which is the third-longest field goal in CIF history. That made it 20-0.
It was more of the same in the second half of the game with the Broncos scoring a late touchdown to avoid the shutout.
With the 34-6 win, Torrey Pines improved to 5-6 on the season and will play at No. 2 seed Lincoln next week.
Rancho Bernardo finished the year 7-4.
Falcon quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi finished the night completing 10-of-17 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown.
Running back Cael Helfrich carried the ball 27 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
