Week 12 North County Game of the Week: La Costa Canyon Mavericks 25, Granite Hills Eagles 16
For the first time ever, the Granite Hills Eagles and the La Costa Canyon Mavericks faced off on the field in the first round of the Division I playoffs. Granite Hills came in as the 11th seed and La Costa Canyon as the 6th seed.
After a hard-fought battle, the La Costa Canyon Mavericks were the ones who came out on top, winning 25-16.
It was a slow start on both sides of the ball as the two teams couldn’t really get the ball moving.
Granite Hills stopped the Mavericks as Austin Smith soared his way and recorded an interception.
The Mavericks didn’t take the stop too hard considering they showed the Eagles up with an interception of their own by Hunter Binney followed by a 5-yard touchdown by Aiden Lippert, which was sealed with a two-point conversion from Michael McCallister to Kristofer Sanchez and La Costa Canyon led 8-0.
Later in the second quarter, the Mavericks’ Marshall Eucker found Trevor Gonzalez for the 30-yard touchdown pass and a 15-0 lead.
La Costa Canyon’s kicker showed up as well with a 38-yard field goal to put the Mavericks up, 18-0.
Later, the Eagles tried to light up the board but Charlie Schmitz didn’t let that happen and came up with an interception, which led to a 75-yard touchdown run by Lippert to put La Costa Canyon up 25-0.
Granite Hills got on the board in the fourth quarter when quarterback Justus McComb kept the ball and went seven yards for a score, followed by a two-point conversion and the Eagles were on the board 25-8.
Shortly after, the Eagles find the end zone again when McComb found James Johnson, who somehow stayed on his feet for a 52-yard touchdown, which was followed by a two-point conversion from McComb to Jaylen Hall, but it wouldn’t be enough for the Eagles, as their season ends 5-6.
La Costa Canyon will travel to Mission Hills next Friday night for the second round of the Division I playoffs.
