Week 12 South Bay Game of the Week: Oceanside Pirates 10, Eastlake Titans 0
No.9 Oceanside blanks No.8 Eastlake, 10-0, in the first round of the Division I playoffs.
Last season, then No.2 Eastlake defeated No.10 Oceanside, 29-7, in the second round of Div. I. Pirate Head Coach David Rodriguez said, “it was 365 days of preparing for this moment.”
Oceanside running back Kavika Tua was also licking his chops to play Eastlake as he was bottled up as a sophomore rushing for only nine yards against Eastlake in 2018.
Similar to 2018, Tua was held in check most of the game as the Titans front seven was stifling in the first half. However, this time Tua would end up breaking big runs in the fourth quarter to compile 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. He also added three receptions for 47 yards.
This season, Tua has rushed for 1,625 yards and 16 touchdowns rushing for more than 100 yards in all but one game.
Both offenses rely on the running game. However, the strength of both defenses is their front seven. Both defenses up front prevailed as the common saying defenses win championships was evident.
Eastlake had two costly drops that would have been touchdowns. According to Eastlake Head Coach Paco Silva, “If we catch one of those passes, we have a great chance to win the game.”
Overall, Oceanside played better football making less mistakes and creating more opportunities.
Oceanside will travel to Steel Canyon to take on the No.1 seed Cougars. The Pirates will look to make it two years in a row where a No.9 team beats a No.1 seed in Division I as Mission Hills beat La Costa Canyon 14-0 in the second round last year.
