Week 13 Game of the Week: Carlsbad Lancers 21, Cathedral Catholic Dons 20
The Carlsbad Lancers went into Cathedral Catholic and used big plays and timely defense to beat the Dons, 21-20, and head to the San Diego CIF Open Division final.
Both teams were dealing with injuries and there was just one score in the first half – a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Zavien Watson.
Cathedral’s Malachi Williams picked off an Aidan Sayin pass early in the second quarter, but the Dons missed a 34-yard field goal attempt keeping it 7-0.
It was a completely different game in the second half.
Sayin threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Cole Wright to tie the game at 7-all.
After a quick three and out, Carlsbad took its first lead when the Sayin-to-Wright connection struck again from 42 yards out making it 14-7.
Cathedral struck back on the ensuing drive when Charlie Mirer threw to Coleman Smith in the flat and he outraced the Lancer defense 68 yards to the end zone to tie the game 14-all.
Not to be outdone, Wright scored on a 76-yard catch-and-run on a pass from Sayin to give the Lancers a 21-14 lead with 8:55 left in the game.
With 1:16 left in the game, Mirer threw his second touchdown pass of the game to Smith to get within one point. Head coach Sean Doyle decided to go for a two-point conversion, however, the try failed, and Carlsbad held on to win, 21-20.
Cole Wright finished the night with eight catches for 175 yards and three touchdowns.
Aidan Sayin was 14-for-23 for 213 yards and three touchdowns.
Cathedral’s Zavien Watson rushed 28 times for 111 yards one touchdown in a losing cause.
