Week 13: Oceanside Pirates 26, Steele Canyon Cougars 19 (OT)
In a San Diego CIF Division I quarterfinal matchup on Friday night, Oceanside played at Steele Canyon. The end result was a 26-19 Oceanside victory.
The first quarter of this game was on the slower side as compared to the remainder of the match, beginning with a massive hit from Kavika Tua. Oceanside then went on to dominate the rest of the quarter.
During the second quarter, a big breakaway from Steele Canyon’s offense occurred with touchdowns from both Christopher Carter and Chance Johnson.
Although Steele Canyon scored twice, we saw multiple picks thrown to Oceanside’s defense. One of which was by senior Dimitri Zakar, putting the Pirates in great scoring position.
The Pirates weren’t able to convert going into the half, so they started the third quarter, 13-0. Twelve seconds into the start of the third, the Cougars then made it 19-0.
Only two minutes later, Oceanside’s Kavika Tua turned on the jets, scoring a 50-yard touchdown to make the score 19-7. Steele Canyon was still on top.
Within the last seven minutes of the fourth, the Pirates kicked a field goal and forced a safety from the Cougars.
Then, with 19 seconds remaining in the third and Oceanside trailing 19-12, Tua scored a 27-yard touchdown, tying the game 19-all.
The fourth quarter went by fast considering there was not a single touchdown made, pushing the game into overtime.
Entering overtime, Oceanside took the first possession and the opening play resulted in a 25-yard touchdown from senior Rich Jaime to give the Pirates the lead, 26-19.
The game was over when linebacker Jalen Ramsey intercepted a Cougar pass attempt. This was celebrated with his teammates in the end zone.
Oceanside, now 8-4, won the match, 26-19, and move on to play the 7-4 Madison Warhawks on Friday, Nov. 22.
