Week 13: Orange Glen Patriots 52, Patrick Henry Patriots 28
The Orange Glen Patriots were well rested and ready to be tested Friday night Against the visiting Patrick Henry Patriots, after enjoying a bye in the opening round of the CIF San Diego Section Division IV playoffs.
This battle of the Patriots saw those hailing from the north emerge victorious, as Orange Glen led Patrick Henry throughout most of the contest and went on to win 52-28.
Of Orange Glen’s 52 points, more than 30 resulted directly from the efforts of one of the county’s standout running backs, Cael Patterson, who not only scored four touchdowns Friday night but also added significant yardage to an already impressive stat sheet that showed him rushing for more than 2,200 yards during the regular season. His point total Friday included multiple successes in 2-point conversions after touchdowns.
Patterson’s longest score came in the third quarter, when he broke through the Patrick Henry line to dart for the end zone and a 43-yard touchdown.
The resulting 38-14 Orange Glen lead looked for a few moments insurmountable — and it ultimately was — but a quick score in return for Patrick Henry gave the visiting team and fans hope, as Patrick Henry running back Elijaih Lux took a direct snap from center, looked left, and tossed a strike to receiver Kai Jesse for a 28-yard score and a narrower Orange Glen lead of 38-22. That formula
But that 16-point deficit was as close as Patrick Henry came to a comeback, as that Patrick Henry formula of having Lux take snaps was the visitors’ go to equation — and perhaps not the best — for winning on the road. The competing squads of patriots traded scores and mixed in some successful and unsuccessful 2-point tries through the rest of the third and fourth quarters, but without a go-to passing game, Patrick Henry failed to pull out of the hole it had dug.
With Santana’s win against Escondido Friday, the Orange Glen Patriots will now face the Sultans on the road in the Division IV semifinal Nov. 22. Catch highlights from that and all other matchups in the CIF San Diego Section playoffs next Friday on the Prep Pigskin Report, only on KUSI.
