Christian Patriots 42, University City Centurions 41
Talk about a nail biter of a game! The Division III quarterfinal game did not disappoint as both teams combined for 83 points between the two. Former 2008 Silver Pigskin Finalist Tate Forcier was at the helm as Offensive Coordinator for the Centurions they put on a show even though they came up short in the end.
In the first quarter the Christian Patriots earned a touchdown on the ground through a Javier Jimenez 12-yard touchdown run with a 2-point conversion added to put the lead at 8-0. UC quickly responded back with 2 Casey Granfors touchdowns, he caught a 13-yard touchdown and had an 86-yard pick 6 which gave the Centurions the lead at 14-8.
In the second quarter the Patriots responded back with a 1-yard Jimenez score his second of the game to pull even with the Centurions 14-14. It was back and forth before half as Alexander Gonzalez scored from 1-yard out and Granfors made a spectacular one handed grab for a 38-yard touchdown from the arm of quarterback Gunnar Gray. The game was tied at 21 going into halftime.
In the 3rd the Patriots Gonzalez had his second touchdown of the evening scampering 54-yards into the end zone for the 27-21 lead after the missed extra point. Christian’s Owen Easley found Matt Armijo for the 10-yard score which put the Patriots in the lead now up 14, 35-21. Did’t stop the Centurions as Gray found Granfors for the 5-yard touchdown putting the score at 35-27 Christian.
The fourth quarter is where University took advantage of two costly turnovers by the Patriots. They capitalized with Gray finding receiver Jurne Smith twice, one touchdown from 9-yards out and a absolute bomb from 61-yards. However, the Centurions would miss the extra point on that last touchdown. This put University City in the lead 41-35. Christian had around 3 minutes to drive the field and score a touchdown and make the extra point to win the game. Thats just what they did. Easley found receiver Bryce Riepl in the back of the end zone to put the game at 41-41. The extra point was missed… however, there was a flag on the field and the kick was able to be retaken. The extra point was drilled the second time and the Christian Patriots won 42-41.
This will end the University City Centurions hopes for the Divison III Championship trophy, but they have a remarkable offense with great coaching and look to improve next year after making the quarterfinals this year. The 1st seeded Christian Patriots will take on the 5th seeded Morse in the Division III Semi Finals.
