East County Game of the Week: Morse Tigers 34, Christian Patriots 6
The #5 Morse Tigers (8-4) claimed a spot in the Division III title game, with a 34-6 win over the #1 Christian Patriots (10-2) in the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week.
Isaiah Thompson capped the opening drive with a touchdown run to put the Tigers on the board, just as he did in the regular season matchup between these two squads. This plunge came from three yards out, part of a 111-yard night for Thompson.
The scoreboard showed 6-0 until the final minute of the half. Morse’s Shamar Martin launched a 25-yard rocket to Michael Wright, which took them down to the Patriot 17. And a few plays later, Martin slid down the right sideline for an 11-yard score and a 14-0 lead at the break.
The only score in the third quarter came courtesy of the Morse defense. Wright hauled in another long bomb — this one from the hand of Christian quarterback Owen Easley — then wound his way through the entire Patriot offense, all the way to the end zone for a 75-yard interception return.
Martin flashed his speed again in the final frame, sprinting 50 yards to put the Tigers up 28-0. He would tally 132 yards on the ground.
Julian Stafford also scored for Morse, with a 23-yard run that pushed the margin to 34-0. And Christian got on the board in the final minute, with Alex Gonzalez breaking loose on a 62-yard scamper to make the final score 34-6.
Morse will face off against #2 Central Union in the final, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. on September 24 at Southwestern College.
PREVIEW – It’s an Eastern League rematch in the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week, as the #5 Morse Tigers (7-4) travel to El Cajon Valley to meet the #1 Christian Patriots (10-1) with a trip to the Division III championship on the line.
The two sides first met up on Morse’s home turf on October 5, with the Tigers taking an 8-0 lead on the first drive and pitching a shutout through three quarters, thanks to a trio of interceptions. But in the final 8 minutes, Patriot quarterback Owen Easley capped a pair of drives with short touchdown runs to snag a 14-8 win.
Christian would cruise through the rest of their conference schedule to claim the Eastern League crown, with their only loss on the season coming in a weather-shortened contest against Cathedral. After a first round bye, they squeaked by University City in a 42-41 shootout, with Easley hitting Bryce Riepl for the go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes. Alex Gonzalez and Javier Jimenez each scored twice against UC, and handle the majority of the touches for the Patriots.
Morse opened their playoff run with a 42-14 win against Hilltop, highlighted by Shamar Martin rushing for 274 yards and 4 touchdowns. Martin is committed to UCLA as a cornerback — he anchors the secondary for the Tigers while also operating as one of their main offensive fulcrums.
Martin’s main running mate in the backfield is Isaiah Thompson, who posted a pair of scores as Morse went on the road for a 22-14 win over Brawley in Round 2.
On the other side of the bracket, #6 Santa Fe Christian faces off against #2 Central. The winners of each matchup will meet in the finals at Southwestern College on November 24.
