Week 2: Escondido Cougars 49, Orange Glen Patriots 29
Escondido turned in a dominating first half performance and rode that wave all the way to the end as the Cougars defeated the Orange Glen Patriots, 49-29.
Escondido’s junior quarterback Robbie Ramos wasted no time getting the scoring going for the Cougars by throwing an early touchdown pass to give them a 7-0 lead.
Escondido got the ball right back and Ramos wasted no time throwing his second touchdown of the evening with a 12-yard strike to wide receiver Dominic Torres.
Orange Glen finally got some offense going and went to their best player to get the job done. Last year’s player of the year scampered for a 29-yard touchdown run and converted the 2-point conversion to cut the Escondido lead to 14-8.
For the rest of the first half, it was the Robbie Ramos and Tajae Brooks show.
Early in the second quarter, Ramos hooked up with Brooks on a 55-yard touchdown pass down the sideline which gave Escondido a 21-8 lead.
They were not done yet.
The Cougars got the ball right back and Ramos went back to Brooks, this time on a 71-yard touchdown pass that gave the Cougars a 28-8 cushion.
Still not content with their advantage, Escondido took the ball late in the half and the dynamic duo did it again.
A 56-yard strike from Ramos reached Brooks again as he broke a tackle and took the ball into the endzone.
The Cougars took a commanding 35-8 lead into the halftime break.
Orange Glen did their best to fight back after quarterback Ethan Villalobos threw a touchdown to cut the deficit to 15-35.
Once again, however, the Patriots were stung by the Brooks and Ramos combination. This time to the tune of an 85-yard touchdown that increased their lead to 42-15.
Cael Patterson added one more score and Ramos added another touchdown on the ground to bring the final score to 49-29.
Ramos finished his incredible night by finishing with seven total touchdowns, six through the air and one on the ground. His dominating performance was definitely boosted by his No. 1 target, Brooks, who grabbed four touchdown catches for the game.

A long-time rivalry is being renewed Friday night as the Patriots of Orange Glen take on the Cougars of Escondido High School.
The last time these two rivals played each other was in 2015 and that game ended with a 38-13 Escondido victory.
Coming off a Division V title last year, Orange Glen picked up right where they left off after pummeling Waimea High School in Hawaii, 41-16.
Led by the league’s reigning player of the year, running back Cael Patterson, the Patriots came out firing and did not let the Hawaiian breeze slow their offense down.
Patterson accounted for 238 all-purpose yards and 4 total touchdowns – two rushing and two receiving – in the victory.
The Escondido Cougars are coming off a hard-fought 45-42 loss to Hilltop last week.
Despite the loss, however, they should feel good about the way they played and the effort they gave throughout the contest.
A dominating performance by senior Matt Malone kept his team in the game till the final whistle.
The running back ran up, over, and around the Hilltop defense to the tune of five total touchdowns.
In order to get the victory in this matchup, the Cougars will look to Malone early and often for his leadership and explosive playmaking ability.
Be sure to show up early as Escondido High School will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of their CIF championship team from 1969.
The game will be on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 P.M. at Escondido High School.
