Week 2: Mount Miguel Matadors 44, Chula Vista Spartans 7

They came. They conquered.

The Mount Miguel Matadors dominated on a road win against the Chula Vista Spartans with a final score of 44-7. With a 22-man army, the Matadors showed speed and efficiency as both sides of the ball scrambled to execute their best plays.

It was a pass-heavy matchup. On Mt. Miguel’s side, Junior QB Jacob Laverdiere connected with Jahiem Allen-Pompey for three touchdowns and over 100 yards. Pompey makes the first stride for a 27 yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. In the second, Chula Vista’s QB Omar Perez gets sacked for the second safety of the night taking the score to 10-0 Matadors.

Before the half, Perez and Dylan Sallee connect for a 9 yard touchdown and at the start of the third, Laverdiere tosses it to Pompey for two scores in two minutes.

With great effort, the Spartans’ QB Omar Perez tossed it successfully to Alex Guzman, Karlos Jimenez, Carlos Serratos and rushed for over 20 yards making long drives towards the end zone all game long. But it wasn’t enough against the Matadors defense on Friday night. Just goes to show the Spartans are shaking off a little dust at the start of the season.

Next week Chula Vista hosts Escondido and Mt. Miguel travels to Solana Beach to take on Santa Fe Christian.

PREVIEW

Mount Miguel’s first road game of the season will be against Chula Vista for a South Bay Friday night showdown.

As both schools prepare for a win on their record, here are key players to look out for.

The Mount Miguel Matadors are led by junior quarterback Jacob Laverdiere, who played a part in all four touchdowns in last week’s game.

Laverdiere threw for three touchdown passes and rushed for a 4-yard score.

He is joined by returning teammate Jahiem Allen-Pompey, who finished last season with 706 receiving yards.

In Chula Vista, the Spartans look to junior quarterback Omar Perez, who racked up 311 passing yards last week in their matchup against La Jolla Country Day.

Running back Nain Fernandez tallied three solo tackles and caused a fumble in an attempt to stop the impending LJCD Torreys.
