Week 2 State Farm Game of the Week: St. Augustine Saints 47, Eastlake Titans 0
The St. Augustine Saints went on the road to Eastlake and dominated the game on both sides of the ball on their way to a 47-0 win over the Titans.
Senior quarterback and team captain Angelo Peraza set up the first score of the night in the first quarter when he completed a 44-yard pass to a fellow senior and captain wide receiver Tyson McWilliams to the 1-yard line.
Running back Byron Cardwell finished off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run making it 7-0 Saints.
After Eastlake went three and out, Peraza again connected with Williams for a 21-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead.
Throughout the night, Peraza showed off his scrambling ability.
In the second quarter he started to the right, stopped, went back to the left and around the end for a 23-yard touchdown run making it 21-0 St. Augustine at the half.
The defense had a big night, as well, led by sophomore defensive end Gracen Halton, who had two sacks and spent much of the night in the Titans’ backfield.
Overall, the Saints compiled four sacks and two interceptions.
Former Eastlake Titan starting quarterback Richard Colmenero III played most of the second half of the game and was able to throw a touchdown against his former team late in the third quarter – a 41-yard strike to McWilliams.
Peraza, the Player of the Game, finished the night completing 7-of-15 passes for 106 yards and one touchdown. He rushed six times for 80 yards and another touchdown.
McWilliams caught four passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns and Cardwell finished with 17 carries for 65 yards and three touchdowns.
The Saints improved to 2-0 and will host Loyola, out of Los Angeles, next Friday. Eastlake fell to 0-2 and will go back on the road to play Lincoln next Friday.
The Eastlake Titans (0-1) are licking their wounds coming off a 17-6 loss on opening night to Steele Canyon. The Titans will host St. Augustine (1-0) after the Saints dominated both sides of the ball in a season-opening win against Bonita Vista.
Titan transfer quarterback Richard Colmenero III will get a chance to face his former team along with senior quarterback Angelo Peraza, who threw two touchdown passes one week ago.
Junior running back Byron Cardwell ran for 158 yards and two TDs last week and is a threat to take it to the house anytime he touches the football.
The calling card of the Saints is their defense. Last week they had 18 tackles for loss, four sacks, four interceptions, and two fumble recoveries.
Eastlake is playing a very tough schedule leading into league. Five of its first six games are against teams currently ranked in the top 10 in San Diego County.
Quarterback Adriel Colmenero completed a 67-yard pass with wide receiver Holden Stevens to set up their lone touchdown last week.
Running back Mateo La broke a 70-yard run later in the game, as well, so the Titans do have big-play ability despite losing 25 players from their title-winning team one season ago.
