Week 3: Oceanside Pirates 43, San Marcos Knights 35
Under the Friday Night Lights, the Oceanside Pirates and San Marcos Knights engaged in a spirited offensive slugfest. Despite the Knights’ offensive cavalry charging down the field in the fourth quarter, the Pirates’ defense stood strong to hang on for a 43-35 victory.
The first quarter went down as a defensive showdown as the Knights dug in defensively against the Pirates offensive shelling. However, San Marcos drew first blood as quarterback Emmett Brown linked up with senior wide receiver Gavin Cherveny for a 29-yard touchdown.
Oceanside tied the game up after a blocked punt fell into the hands of Kamron Beachem, who returned the kick for a touchdown.
Once the second quarter rolled around, the Pirates took over the game.
Quarterback Jakob Harris connected with Rich Jaime on a 12-yard touchdown and running back Kavika Tua went Beast Mode, breaking through tackles and burning the secondary with an 80-yard sprint to the endzone, making the score 21-7 at halftime.
The Knights got the jump on the Pirates as an interception of Harris set up a Jailen Bainer two-yard touchdown dive.
Oceanside (2-1) didn’t take this lightly and retook a two-touchdown lead a 32-yard screen pass to Tua from Harris.
The volleys continued to be fired from both sides as Zavion Reese caught a pass from Brown and sprung free for a 60-yard score.
The fourth quarter was when the final volleys would be fired.
Isiah Hernandez pushed the San Marcos pile at the goal line for a two-yard score, and an ensuing two-point conversion made the score 36-21. A Rich Jaime 8-yard score pushed Oceanside’s lead to 43-21.
Staring defeat in the eyes, the Knights weren’t going down without a fight.
With their student section cheering them on, Brown found Cheverny once again for a touchdown, this time going for 52 yards.
The recovery of an onside kick gave them possession of the football again, and an amazing catch by Reese set up a one-yard score.
However, a final offensive push came up short for the Knights as Brown’s final heave was overthrown and picked off by Trejan Apodca and Oceanside walked away from the field with a 43-35 victory in tow.
Both Oceanside and San Marcos (1-2) will get the chance to rest up as both teams enter a bye week.

Preview
Week 3 of the Prep Pigskin Report is coming and will feature two 1-1 teams from the Avocado League who are coming off big wins in Week 2.
The San Marcos Titans (1-1) will look to defend their home turf as the Oceanside Pirates (1-1) come to town.
A balanced mix of offense and defense led to San Marcos’ first win over the season last week against Mira Mesa.
Quarterback Emmett Brown will attempt to continue his positive play, as he tossed three touchdowns to two different receivers.
Seniors Jalen Bainer and Gavin Cherveny will be pains in the Pirates’ side as Brown has the arm strength to stretch the field with his veteran receivers.
The San Marcos defense, led by senior Nick Tiefer and his 13 tackles, imitated a brick wall, as they only allowed 76 total yards of offense. As a team, the Knights broke through the Mira Mesa offensive line to record five sacks and a fumble.
Led by junior running back Kavika Tua and his 223 yards of rushing, Oceanside took a solid 26-6 victory over Westview.
The Pirates’ main plan of attack is a bombardment of rushing with Tua spearheading the assault. The junior running back already has five touchdowns and 346 rushing yards to his name this season.
The last time these two teams squared off, San Marcos scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to spurn Oceanside and secure a 49-42 victory. Now, Oceanside will be invading San Marcos’ home with the intention of securing the most precious of plunder – its second win of the season.
