Week 3: Otay Ranch Mustangs 39, Point Loma Pointers 26
It was a warm Friday evening with even warmer football.
Point Loma was the first to get into action as senior running back Kaden Gill had a 40-yard gain. That set up a 6-yard touchdown by junior Joaquin Quintanilla. The extra point was good and Point Loma was up 7-0.
Still, in the first quarter, Point Loma punted and Otay Ranch’s Miles Brotski returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. The kick was good and the score was tied 7-all.
During the second quarter, Otay Ranch and Point Loma would both built a lot of momentum. Each team would score a few more times. Then this beauty of a play happened. The Mustangs had the ball and quarterback Paco Puentas found Dylan Baca for a 57-yard touchdown. Otay Ranch led, 24-20.
In the third quarter, Otay Ranch continued to own the field. Mustang junior running back Carl Addy added a 25-yard touchdown to his stat sheet. The extra point was good and the Mustangs were up 32-20.
Point Loma would score once more trying to even out the game with Otay Ranch with a touchdown, but would not be able to catch up.
Otay Ranch added one more touchdown, a 39-yarder to be exact, thanks to Puentas and junior wide receiver Joseph Firebaugh.
The final score was Otay Ranch 39, Point Loma 26.
Next Friday, Otay Ranch has a home game against St. Augustine at 7 p.m. Point Loma hosts another home game against Rancho Bernardo. That also happens to be their Homecoming game.

The Point Loma Pointers will battle off against the Otay Ranch Mustangs this Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Point Loma’s turf.
Point Loma will be returning home after a big 28-8 win against Ramona last week.
So far, the Pointers are 1-1 looking to secure another home win under their belt.
Expect Pointer wide receiver/defensive back Tristian Shafer to be an effective factor in Friday’s game for Point Loma. Just last week, Shafer had one interception, one fumble recovery, one rushing touchdown, and one receiving touchdown. Expect Shafer and the Pointers to take a step forward this week.
Traveling from the South Bay are the Otay Ranch Mustangs. Otay Ranch woke up some doubters when they upset well-respected program San Marcos in Week 1, 28-24, however they fell short to Valley Center last week, 17-7.
When asked what will it take to bounce back, two-way payer Ethan Knight responded, “we need to improve on our assignments, alignment, and execution, and we need to stop the unnecessary penalties.”
The Knights and the Mustangs are looking at Friday’s game as an opportunity to regain a winning streak.
