Week 3: Serra Conquistadors 28, Del Norte Nighthawks 7

The Serra Conquistadors sealed their first win against the Del Norte Nighthawks, 28-7, on Friday night.

The Conquistador defense was on fire, giving the Nighthawks a difficult time getting in the end zone.

Serra had a great start in the first quarter as wide receiver Willie Peterson scored the first touchdown of the night. However, the Nighthawks prevented them from scoring their extra point as Daniel Kang blocked the kick, 6-0, Serra.

At the end of the first quarter, linebacker Keoni Lamoreaux cames around the corner to make a sack, forcing a fumble, which was recovered by James Harrell. The fumble led to a Serra touchdown, making it 12-0. Serra then went for a two-point conversion and scored it, making it 14-0.

Entering the second half, the Conquistadors scored once more, as Dustan Ellison scored his third touchdown for the night, 20-0, Serra. The team went for its second two-point conversion and succeeded again, this time by Brock Desta, making it 22-0.

During the third quarter, Serra (1-2) scored its last touchdown from Brevin Lingao, but the Nighthawks saved themselves from a complete blowout and finished the quarter with a 57-yard touchdown by Jonah Kang.

Del Norte fell to 1-2.

The Conquistadors have a bye week next and will return to their home field on Sept. 20 versus San Diego High School at 6:30 P.M.

The Del Norte Nighthawks fly over to Serra High School this Friday, September 6th at 6:30 p.m. to face the Serra Conquistadors.

This will be a good rematch to see between the two teams since the Conquistadors kicked the Nighthawks out of the playoffs last season, outscoring them 41-30.

The Conquistadors are off to a slow start as they started off their season 0-2. So far they have faced the Scripps Ranch Falcons, where the Falcons swooped them in an 18-0 defeat, and the Santana Sultans, who outscored the Conquistadors, 31-14.

Serra’s head coach, Dru Smith, stated that his team wasn’t able to execute and finish strong in the second half after last week’s match against Santana. The Conquistadors had a good start in the second half but were not able to come out with the victory, falling behind a final score of 31-14.

The Nighthawks are also approaching this week’s game off of last week’s loss to Scripps Ranch. The team fell short in a 30-10 loss to the Falcons, who are currently 2-0.

The Nighthawks and the Conquistadors went head-to-head twice in the 2018 season. Del Norte was able to hold the win for the regular season, however, the Conquistadors ended the Nighthawks season during the playoffs.

Tune into PPR on KUSI at 11 p.m. to see if the Conquistadors can seal their first win of the season or if the Nighthawks take revenge from last year’s playoff game.
