PREVIEW

The third week’s the charm in high school football. Some teams have started off strong with victories, while others are still finding their groove. All is well because there’s plenty of football left to be played.

This week the Escondido Cougars (1-1) travel down I-15 to play against the Chula Vista Spartans (0-2) for a non-conference matchup. Last year, the Cougars pounced on the Spartans in a 31-7 win at home.

The Spartans are coming off of a tough 44-7 home loss against Mount Miguel.

Although the Spartans have started the season with two losses, they are very capable of coming out on top. With a heavy junior and senior roster, it’s a plus for them. They know the game and each other’s strengths.

Key players to watch on the Spartans side are junior quarterback Omar Perez, who has three passing touchdowns and 510 total yards, and senior wide receiver and captain Dylan Sallee, who has two receiving touchdowns under his belt.

Escondido conquered over their long-time rivals, Orange Glen, in an impressive 49-29 win.

Junior quarterback Robert Ramos had an impressive game last week with seven total touchdowns. His dominating performance was paired well with his right-hand man, junior wide receiver Tajae Brooks, who caught four of the seven touchdowns.

In order to get add another victory to their campaign, Ramos and Brooks need to keep the momentum going.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Chula Vista High School.
