Week 4: Poway Titans 47, Escondido Cougars 10
The Poway Titans (3-1) won on the road on Friday night against the Escondido Cougars (2-2).
The Cougars kicked off and recovered the ball to start the game. A few plays later, the Cougars scored a 29-yard field goal to make the score 3-0.
The Titans answered back quickly, putting seven on the board making the score 7-3 and the lead only grew from there for Poway.
Poway’s defense put the pressure on Cougar junior quarterback Robert Ramos all night.
In the second quarter, Ramos threw a 79-yard pass to his wide receiver, Tajae Brooks, scoring a touchdown. That would be the only touchdown the host Escondido team had of the night, drawing to within 21-10.
The standout player of the night was Poway’s running back, Josh Butler. Butler ran a 49-yard touchdown in the second quarter and tacked on three more TDs before the game ended.
Right after the 49-yard run by Butler, Escondido’s kick was blocked by Poway, setting up another touchdown for them on the 3-yard line. Only two plays later, junior running back Colby Kopacz jumped in and scored a touchdown for the Titans, making the score, 34-10, Poway. The extra-point was no good.
As the Titans continued to drive down the field later in the second quarter, a throw by senior quarterback Andrew Wiesley was intercepted by Cougar Jesus Fraga to stop the drive.
Entering the third quarter, it was all Titan ball.
Butler ran the ball for nine yards to set up another TD. Poway attempted a two-point conversion, but that was no good. The Titans would drive the ball down to the end zone one more time before the game ended.
The final score was a Poway win, 47-10.
Escondido will travel to Fallbrook next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Poway will head home and host Westview at 7 p.m., as well.
A Reminder, all high school football highlights are aired at 11 p.m. on KUSI for the Prep Pigskin Report every Friday night.
We are entering Week 4 and it’s a cross-league battle this Friday night. The Poway Titans (2-1) are heading to the Escondido Cougars’ house for war.
Escondido (2-1) is coming off a road win against Chula Vista, 19-12, and again, junior quarterback Robert Ramosdominated the field.
After speaking with head coach Jud Bordman about this upcoming game, he said, ”Poway will be a challenging opponent.” Also adding, “but the team is excited for the game.”
Bordman mentioned it is still early in the season and his team is focusing on the fundamentals and working out the kinks, just like any other football team at the beginning of the season.
These two teams may be in two different divisions and leagues for that matter, but this matchup will be a good one for both the Titans and Cougars. A challenge for players to see new talent on the field that they don’t necessarily play each year.
Now, the Titans are looking to lock in another win on Friday night, which would make that three in a row for them. A stand out player for the Titans is not only their senior running back Josh Butler, but their entire defensive line has been impressive thus far.
Friday is expected to be a fun one. This is a matchup you sure don’t want to miss. Tune in at 11 p.m. on KUSI for the Prep Pigskin Report to catch all the game highlights around San Diego.
