Week 4: Vista Panthers 48, Morse Tigers 7

The Vista Panthers hit the road and defeated the Morse Tigers, 48-7.

On the first drive of the game, Morse running back Jaycob Hicks showed off some speed. He took the handoff 50 yards to the house to give the Tigers the lead, 7-0.

Those would be the last Morse points of the game.

It didn’t take long for Vista to respond. Still in the first, quarterback Travis Bennett found Desmond Taua for the 31-yard hookup. Taua dragged a defender into the endzone knotting things up, 7-all.

At halftime, the Panthers led 14-7.

Vista opened things up in the second half, as the scoring was often. In the third quarter, things just kept piling on as it was Bennett again, this time finding fullback David Flores for an 18-yard touchdown pass.

That put the Panthers on top, 34-7.

Later it was Taua once more, as his versatility on full display. He took the handoff 53-yards for the score. Taua made two defenders miss with a nasty juke at the 15-yard line making it 41-7, Panthers.

Vista put the exclamation point on things when junior running back Aidan Villejo had a 53-yard run of his own in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers’ hour-long Week 4 road trip ended with an impressive victory.

Preview

The Vista Panthers travel to meet the Morse Tigers on Friday night. This one kicks off at 6:30 p.m.

Vista enters the week 2-1 after romping the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns, 54-2, in last week’s rivalry game. With the win, the Panthers reclaimed the City of Vista Trophy in front of a jam-packed home crowd.

Things got started early for the Panthers when – not even two minutes into the game – wideout Brent Lawson rushed for a 30-yard touchdown for Vista.

Things got a little chippy soon after, leading to a Vista player being ejected.

If the first half wasn’t an indication of how the Panthers intended for this one to turn out, the second half said it all.

After allowing two points on a safety early in the game, Vista scored 40 points in the second half, delivering the blowout. Can the Panthers do it again on Friday?

The Tigers will definitely have something to say about that, as this squad enters the week a perfect 2-0.

Last week, Morse squeezed out a 28-25 victory over the Kearny Komets. The defense proved to be key in that one.

The Tigers pounced early and often, putting up 22 points in the first quarter. Daniel Thorton started things off with a 27-yard rushing score.

Senior Micheal Cunningham found pay dirt next with a 12-yard run. Later, Cunningham connected with Jaycob Hicks for a 52-yard touchdown pass. At the end of one, Morse led, 22-7.

The Komets attempted the comeback but fell short. The Tigers put a stamp on this one with a goal-line stand.

Highlights for Friday’s matchup between Vista and Morse can be seen on the Prep Pigskin Report Friday at 11 p.m.
