Mar Vista Mariners 27, Santana Sultans 13
The Mar Vista Mariners defeated the Santana Sultans, 27-13, at Santana High School on Friday night.
In the first quarter, Mar Vista started off with the ball as Jacob Galeana ran it up the field but a hit knocked the ball loose and Santana recovered.
A short run thereafter led to a 32-yard field goal. The Sultans get on the board first with three points.
Galeana starts to get it going in the second quarter. He punched it in from a few yards out to get the Mariners into the matchup. It was 10-7 Santana, but Gaelana was just getting started.
At the beginning of the third quarter, the green and gold squad were ready for more pigskin action.
The Sultans’ Sean Iverson handed the ball off to Brooks Moutaw. He was stopped short with a huge tackle by Antonia Reyna and lost a few yards. The purple and gold team was forced to go for yet another field goal. The score was 20-13, Mar Vista.
It was hard to stop Galeana i,n the last quarter. He ran the ball 26 yards up the right side of the sideline for a Mariners’ touchdown. Then on defense Gaelena as there again. He intercepted a pass intended for James Shaplin and put this matchup away.
Mar Vista gets the 27-13 victory. Both teams are now 4-2.
Next week, the Mariners will face their rivals Southwest San Diego, while the Sultans host Mt. Miguel.
It is Week 6 of the Prep Pigskin Report, as the (3-2) Mar Vista Mariners head to East County to take on the (4-1) Santana Sultans in a non-league matchup on Friday.
These two teams are not meeting on the gridiron for the first time. In fact, they have played against each other for the last six years or so.
Last year, the Mariners hosted the Sultans during the regular season and won 34-28. Now, the Sultans seek redemption as they play on their own turf this week.
Senior Sean Iverson led the offense last week, as quarterback Nathan Temple is recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered during the beginning of the season. His right-hand man was Brooks Moutaw, who scored 2 touchdowns against Vincent Memorial.
Meanwhile, on the green and gold squad, quarterback Alex Guitterez is looking to get his team a victory. So far this season, he has a total of 244 passing yards. On defense, Diego Garza is a force to be reckoned with. The junior linebacker leads his team with 29 solo tackles.
