Week 5: Steele Canyon Cougars 21, Otay Ranch Mustangs 14
It was a night of interceptions by the boys wearing the No. 21. Otay Ranch’s Keith Robinson and Steele Canyon’s Antoine Walker had the entire stadium sitting at the edge of their bleachers as these two teams battled it out for the win on Friday night.
The Mustangs had a chance to tie the score and possibly send us into overtime in the last two minutes of game time as Paco Puentes targeted Ethan Knight in the end zone but in the end, the Cougars would win over the Mustangs by one score.
The first touchdown of the night came at the start of the second quarter when Otay’s Paco Puentes connected with Ethan Knight putting the Mustangs in excellent scoring position. Knight would rush the ball for a 4-yard score.
The Mustangs’ defensive line applied pressure on the Cougars all night keeping them behind the line of scrimmage on their second drive. But after the turnover on downs, Steele Canyon’s Antoine Walker caught his first of three interceptions which would put the Cougars at their own 38-yard line. Four plays later the Cougars would tie it all up at 7-all.
Defensive back Keith Robinson, sporting the No. 21, would get his first of two interceptions giving the ball to Otay. It was the next drive when Steele Canyon’s Antoine Walker, also No. 21, would answer with another interception and Cougars would score taking it to 14-7 with the Cougars leading before the half.
In the third, there were a lot of quarterback keepers and running plays from Chris Carter and DJ Meno. On fourth-and-long, the Cougars went for it as Jeremy Mendez-Gal tossed it to Chris Carter for a 28-yard touchdown pass. The score increased to 21-7.
In the fourth, Otay would cut the lead by seven when a wide-open Dylan Baca would wait for the ball to land perfectly in his hands for a 13-yard touchdown.
The final score was 21-14 and Steele Canyon will start Week 6 undefeated.
Next week, the Cougars will host the Mira Mesa Marauders and Otay Ranch will face off against Cathedral Catholic. Both games are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
The undefeated Steele Canyon Cougars take the field against the Otay Ranch Mustangs this Friday night at 7.
The Cougars are coming off of a Week 4 win against the Bonita Vista Barons as running back Wesley Neely III led the way with three scores and 168 rushing yards.
Receiver Antoine Walker had a 65-yard touchdown catch and Junior Atkintunde ran the ball for a 25-yard score. Steele Canyon will put pressure on the Mustangs on both sides of the ball.
The Mustangs will host this Friday’s matchup.
Last season, the Mustangs went undefeated at home, and as of now, they sit at 1-1. A home win this Friday will lift the Mustangs above .500.
Players to look out for include junior receiver Joseph Firebaugh, who tallied 15 yards in last week’s matchup against St. Augustine, and 55 yards in a Week 3 game against Point Loma.
Junior DJ Meno totaled 122 yards on the ground in Week 3 and Carl Addy ran for 53 yards. These rushers can potentially lead the offense in this Friday’s matchup.
You can catch game highlights for this matchup on KUSI’s Prep Pigskin Report every Friday at 11 p.m.
