Week 6 South Bay Game of the Week: Bonita Vista Barons 29, Hilltop Lancers 23

The Week 6 South Bay Game of the Week features Bonita Vista (1-4) hosting Hilltop (1-4).

This has been a very challenging season for Bonita Vista Head Coach Sam Kirkland III who inherited a team that went 0-11 last year. But his team has notched one victory thus far, breaking the losing streak. The question this night: Can this former NFL wide receiver motivate his players to pick up victory number 2?

In the first quarter Jeremiah Serrano runs it in from short yardage to give Hilltop the lead. In the second quarter David Delgado boots a 40-yard field goal to make it 10-0 Lancers. In the third quarter Delgado does it again…this time with a 30-yard boot.

Then here come the Barons. Quarterback Kevin Rozar throws two touchdown passes to Roland Cota to give the Barons a 15-13 lead. In the fourth quarter Cota makes a nice run into the end zone to widen the Baron lead.

Hilltop fights back when Joey Castillo makes a short scamper into the end zone to bring the Lancers within two points of the Barons. With just over a minute left in the game David Delgado kicks his third field goal of the game to give the Lancers the lead.

Then on the ensuing kick-off…with less than one minute to go…Roland Cota takes it all the way into the end zone (his fourth touchdown of the game) to give the Barons the 29-23 win and Coach Kirkland victory number 2.

PREVIEW – The Week 6 South Bay Game of the Week features Bonita Vista (1-4) hosting Hilltop (1-4).

This has been a very challenging season for Bonita Vista head coach Sam Kirkland III, who inherited a team that went 0-11 last year. But so far his team has notched one victory thus far, breaking the losing streak.

Hilltop’s quarterback Joey Castillo has been a real workhorse for the Lancers; so far this season he has passed for 918 yards. This includes 177 pass attempts resulting in 110 completions and seven touchdowns.

This could be a tough week for the aspiring quarterback as his older brother tells KUSI his younger brother was injured last week. It is important to note his older brother, Alvaro, is a very talented photographer with KUSI.

On defense, the Lancers are led by Gage Scruggs who has racked up 21 solo tackles so far this year.
