Week 7: Monte Vista Monarchs 34, Chula Vista Spartans 17
In a Battle of Vistas, it was the Monte Vista Monarchs defeating the Chula Vista Spartans on “Pink Night” in Spring Valley on Friday, Oct. 4th by a 37-17 score.
Isiah Gardner ran for an inspired 177 yards and three touchdowns against the Spartans.
Chula Vista (0-7) got on the scoreboard first with a 24-yard field goal by Daniel Montes.
Monte Vista (2-4) thought it scored on a 65-yard touchdown by Ruben Silva, but that was called back on a block in the back call. No problem, just a few plays later, Silva took it himself from 46 yards out with 1:18 left in the opening quarter for a 7-3 Monarch lead.
The Spartans thought they had forced a forced fumble and scored on a “scoop and score.” But like a few scores in this game, it was called back due to a penalty. However, Chula Vista did keep possession after the fumble.
A few plays after the turnover, Monte Vista regained possession on a fumbled snap.
Shortly after the bad snap, Silva completed a 34-yard pass to Dajon Shingleton for the lone Monarch passing touchdown of the night.
Chula Vista came right back and with only 11 seconds left in the first half and scored on a 20-yard pass from Omar Perez to Jesus Rodriguez to close the gap to 13-10. This would be as close as the Spartans would get on this October night.
After the break, Gardner scored the first of his touchdowns on this evening from three yards out to push the Monarch lead to 20-10.
Gardner would score on a truly inspired 60-yard run right up the gut to make it 27-10, Monte Vista, with 55 seconds left in the third quarter.
Just less than two minutes into the final quarter, Gardner scored his final touchdown on the night with a 27-yard gallop to make it 34-10, Monte Vista.
Chula Vista’s quarterback was forced out of the game late in the fourth quarter.
On the first play that he was in for, Carlos Serratos threw a nice fade pass to Rodriguez, who caught the ball and then rolled out of the back of the end zone for the final score of 34-17.
Chula Vista will begin Metro-South Bay League action as they host Hilltop (6-1) on Oct. 18.
Monte Vista will host the “Battle of Spring Valley” as Mount Miguel (3-3, 0-1 GVL) will travel east to open Grossmont Valley League action for the Monarchs.
