Orange Glen Patriots 28, Classical Academy Caimans 19
This battle between two neighboring Coastal League teams took all four quarters to reveal the eventual winner, as the hosting Orange Glen Patriots staved off multiple opportunities to lose the lead Friday night against the visiting Classical Academy Caimans, and left the field as winners by a count of 28-19.
Don’t let that 9-point differential fool you. This was a close one, Though the Patriots never lost the lead after opening the game’s scoring in the second quarter, the Caimans remained a fixture on Orange Glen’s coattails throughout. Each time Orange Glen scored — synonymous Friday with each time junior running back Cael Patterson scored — Classical Academy seemed to have a retort.
That’s how it was after Patterson’s opening 25-yard touchdown in the second, which was followed in the Caimans’ possession by a 16-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback James Duncan to senior Aidan Sutherlin. The Patriots watched halftime homecoming festivities with a 14-6 lead, but the Caimans didn’t let it sit as such for long, as they applied pressure in the third quarter with a 4-yard rush for a touchdown by senior Nasser Jones. Patterson’s 9-yard touchdown later in that same quarter was followed by Duncan’s 1-yard keeper for 6 and late in the third, these teams found themselves still separated by only 2 points with the score in Orange Glen’s slight favor at 21-19.
Patterson’s fourth score of the night in the fourth quarter gave the Patriots some much desired breathing room and the eventual assurance of victory, not only making this game worth watching but also bringing a Patriots win on the hosting team’s homecoming night. The Patriots move atop the Coastal League standings with the win.
With the second half of the 2018 football season in full swing, in-league match-ups dominate the schedules, and the time has come for the Orange Glen Patriots and Classical Academy Caimans — both 4-1 — to face off in each team’s first Coastal League game of the season.
A home game for Orange Glen, this will be only the second time these two teams will meet as Coastal League opponents, though they have met each other on the field each year since 2014. As league opponents, the running win-loss count strands at a simple 1-0 in favor of Classical Academy. But since 2014, Carlsbad holds the edge with three wins from the 2014-2016 seasons and then last year’s loss.
On paper, this should be a competitive game, though the Caimans seem to enter with an edge. The Patriots have played one fewer game — Orange Glen won by forfeit in Week 3 against Escondido Charter — and the team will be looking to get into a winning streak after pulling together last week’s win against Army-Navy in a relatively low-scoring affair. The Caimans, meanwhile, are riding the coattails of four straight wins, and a lot of points scored. Each of the team’s last three wins have been shutouts, and the Caimans have amassed scoring totals of 56, 55 and 37 in each of the last three weeks, respectively.
Meanwhile, in each of the Patriots’ three victories won through four quarters of football, the most points Orange Glen has allowed is 14. In the team’s single loss, it allowed 37 against much-higher-ranked San Pasqual.
Look for these two teams to battle it out for their fifth wins this Friday. It could be a good one.
