Week 7: Mount Miguel Matadors 46, Santana Sultans 14
Santana High celebrated their senior football players on Friday night.
However, that did not stop Mount Miguel from bringing all they’ve had. The Matadors came out with the win, 46-14.
The game began with Santana kicking off and giving Mount Miguel possession.
Shortly after, Jacob Laverdiere, of the Matadors, threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Mikey Avant. The rest of the first quarter consisted of both teams going back and forth.
After the start of the second quarter, Mount Miguel made their way to the 2-yard line. Larry Yzaguirre then made his way into the end-zone.
Mount Miguel got possession soon after and Laverdiere threw to Jaheim Allen-Pompey for a 72-yard touchdown pass.
When the Matadors gained possession, they soon lost it after an impressive sack from Eric Kaszycki, of the Sultans.
Santana eventually made their way to the 7-yard line and then Brooks Moutaw rushed in for a touchdown making the score 18-7.
When Mount Miguel had the ball, James Shaplin, of the Sultans, intercepted a pass giving Santana possession.
However, that was short lived when Allen-Pompey of the Matadors intercepted a pass giving possession back to Mount Miguel.
Yzaguirre was handed the ball once more and rushed for an 80-yard touchdown making the score 26-7 at the half.
After the start of the second half, Laverdiere hit Pompey for a 14-yard touchdown pass.
When Santana had the ball, Erik Graham, of the Matadors, intercepted a pass which wrapped up the third quarter.
Shortly after the start of the fourth quarter, Laverdiere threw to Pompey for a 50-yard touchdown. Soon after, Laverdiere threw to Graham for a 49-yard touchdown pass.
Even though the seniors at Santana were hoping for a win on Senior Night, Mount Miguel came out on top with this one.
We are just about halfway through the regular season and this week is a Grossmont Valley League matchup between the Mount Miguel Matadors and the Santana Sultans.
Last week, the Sultans took an unfortunate loss against Mar Vista, 27-13.
However, the Sultans are in good hands. Senior quarterback Sean Iverson has achieved 273 passing yards so far this season and senior running back Brooks Moutaw has rushed for 285 yards. Santana sits on a 4-2 record while ranked 5th in Division IV.
The Matadors, on the other hand, have had some speed bumps. Mount Miguel is currently 1-4 and unfortunately lost to Imperial last week, 51-19.
But the Matadors shouldn’t be worried as they have a sophomore quarterback with a cannon.
Despite the loss, quarterback Jacob Laverdiere threw for 371 yards and has thrown for a total of 1,227 yards. The Matadors are currently ranked 16th in Division III.
The game will be held this Friday, September 25th, at Santana High School at 7 p.m.
