Week 7: Grossmont Foothillers 51, Valhalla Norsemen 7

The Grossmont student section decided to have some fun and throw a “Christmas in September” theme for Friday night’s game.

The Grossmont Foothillers (2-4) were feeling the early Yuletide cheer as they handed the Valhalla Norsemen (0-6) a big lump of coal in the form of a 51-7 smackdown.

Quarterback Jaime Odom led his troops to victory with a four-touchdown performance, including three in the first quarter. Odom dropped a 54-yard present to receiver Brody Schicker for his first touchdown to put Grossmont on the board.

After Will Turner pilfered a Luke Pillsbury pass for an interception, Odom struck again with a 10-yard screen pass to Damari Crawford for a touchdown.

Unfortunately for Valhalla, their offensive struggles would continue at Grossmont. The defensive lineman up front consistently forced pressure in the backfield to drop Pillsbury and stop the running game. Cameron Sanderlin forced a fumble on a big hit, leading to a third Odom touchdown.

After a long Axel Gonzales field goal made the score 24-0, the Foothillers were able to secure the football again. Thomas “Joystick” Mangum was handed the ball on a reverse run, enabled the cheat codes, and took the ball all the way to the house to run the score up to 31-0 after one quarter.

The second quarter started with Jahmal Nevels, who had been tearing through the Valhalla defense, coughing up the football. Despite Ethan Ferkich pouncing the loose ball, the Norsemen were still unable to find the end zone.

Odom would fire one last touchdown pass to Shawn Williams, and exited the game as Dominic Espino entered in his stead.

With the game on cruise control, Espino would hit Schicker for a touchdown to expand the lead and make the score 45-0 at halftime.

The Norsemen wouldn’t fall to the Foothillers without a spirited fight. Pillsbury set up Kiare Worthy with a screen pass, and Worthy took care of the rest, shedding tacklers and surging forward for the first Valhalla touchdown since Week 3 against Mount Miguel.

The celebration didn’t last long, as the ensuing kickoff saw Mangum slice through the coverage like a practiced surgeon and scamper untouched into the end zone for the final score of the game.

Valhalla will look to snap their six-game losing streak and capture a win against the Helix Highlanders (3-3). Grossmont will welcome a scorching hot Granite Hills team (6-0) who just got off a big win against Steele Canyon.

Preview

It is Week 7 of high school football and PPR continues to roll on.

This week features a tense matchup as the Grossmont Foothillers (1-4) look to protect the homeland as they welcome the Valhalla Norsemen (0-5).

It has been a rough season for the Norsemen, who have been roughed up pretty badly over the past two weeks, getting shutout in games against the Otay Ranch Mustangs and the Eastlake Titans.

The Norsemen haven’t been able to get the ball rolling on offense, and while they put up a good fight against the Mount Miguel Matadors, they have been scored only 34 points while surrendering 179 points.

If Valhalla wants to pick up their first win of the season, they will have to be more refined on both sides of the ball to keep the Foothillers from marching up the field.

Grossmont has been on a slide as well, losing their past four games after beating Bishop’s in their opening week. Last week, they got beat by the Poway Titans, who ran past the Foothillers, 51-21.

Grossmont has been hit hard, as they have been outscored 189-73, but their offense has the talent to make some plays.

Jaime Odom will still lead the offense onto the field every Friday night, and he has done a respectable job under center. The junior has gone 64-of-141 with 837 passing yards, tossing 7 touchdown passes against three interceptions. He has the capacity to make some big plays and could lead Grossmont to their second win of the season.
